The Amazing Digital Circus delivers a strong & solid opening episode that brings, a strange, colourful, quite a surprisingly unsettling introduction to a world that looks like a children's cartoon, but I can see by judging this first episode, that it's hiding something much darker underneath.
And what I also really liked & appreciated about this opening episode, is that I found the contrast between the cheerful exaggerated appearance of the circus and then merging with it the genuine psychological/horror of being trapped somewhere againstt your will. No Thank You!!! 😨😨😨
Another big strength here is the visuals. The animation is vibrant, imaginative and stacked with bizarre & unique character designs that goes hand in hand with its environment and setting. The Amazing Digital Circus feels like a world, where absolutely anything can happen and again going back to the visual and animation, the whole colour aesthetic I found made the darker moments stand out more. It totally works.
The animation also does a damn good job at letting us know about "Pomni's" confusion & anxiety, as the character hasn't really understood yet what is going on. Pomni is a very strong & relatable character by the way, which is going to give this show its emotional strength going forward into this 9 episode season.
Also I found all of the side characters, gave the episode plenty of personality. Caine for ne is the one that's standing out so far, as I found him unpredictable, and just his whole obsession to entertain everyone, also creates another interesting angle to the show as well.
And what made the comedy work so well here was the good balance of humour & genuine tension at the same time. Some jokes though can be a little bit uncomfortable, but the show seems very self aware and knows exactly what it is and in a weird way, it does all fit the shows strange tone. Rather than simply being a children's style cartoon, the episode I thought was constantly reminding us, like I said earlier on this review, that there's deeply wrong & dark beneath the colourful & vigilant surface.
I also really liked the world building too. And "The Amazing Digital Circus" deserves a lot of credit for the atmosphere that it brung. I just find the whole concept to ve genuinely effective & unnerving. Imagine waking up inside a digital world. Where you cannot remember your original identity and don't have any idea whether you'll return home or not 😱😱😱
However, I don't think this show will be for everybody as the deliberate chaotic nature to it, won't work or feel necessary to everyone. The shows constant shifts into comedy, surrealism, horror and emotional moments are part of the shows identity, but occasionally the tonal changes will feel overwhelming & undigestable to some people I think. Also some of tge humour could feel a little bit exaggerated for viewers who prefer a more grounded style of storytelling.
As much as I liked the side characters, I found that there not fully developed yet. That will change hopefully, the more deeper into the show we go.
Overall, "The Amazing Digital Circus" 🎪🤡 is an extremely imaginative and impressive opening episode. My Personal Ratings/Scores for Episode 1 is ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ & a Half Stars & a 9/10
