I can’t say enough good things about Widows Bay. It feels like a perfect mix of Stephen King-style small-town horror and the quirky charm of Northern Exposure. The fictional New England island (clearly inspired by real places like Salem) is atmospheric and full of mystery, with every foggy dock and creaky house feeling like it’s hiding something terrible. What makes the show work so well is the balance between horror and comedy. It’s creepy enough to keep you uneasy, but the humor never feels forced or cheesy. The characters are eccentric but genuinely likable, and even the side characters feel memorable. Episode six, directed by Ti West, is especially fantastic—slow-burning period piece, unsettling, and beautifully shot. The penultimate episode and series finale are perfection - I loved the twist at the end! The show manages to be eerie, sometimes funny, and oddly heartfelt all at once. Bottom line: Widows Bay is one of the most refreshing horror-comedy series I’ve seen in years. Smart, atmospheric, and incredibly entertaining. Absolutely worth watching.

Delightfully wholesome horror. An eldtrich terror for the whole family. Morbidly charming. No notes.

I can't think of another series that is so completely my jam. I loved every episode and it's been so nice to see this series find success when so many other great horror series fall into obscurity. Incredibly annoyed at the possible 3 year wait for season two, but that's modern tv for you.

It's pretty damn fun, even though I'm not a big horror fan.

It had so much promise but it meandered so much. It went down side stories that went nowhere. Like whatever happened to the haunted hotel room? I really wanted to like it but it was so predictable.

They have done something I hadn't thought possible: make a series that is truly frightening and truly funny. It's as if Mike Flanagan made Parks and Recreation. I can't wait for the next surprise.

If Stephen King wrote Twin Peaks for Joe Dante to direct it would be Widow's Bay! I adore this show.

Solid solid first half. I felt it dipped just a little in the end, but not so much.

Part Stephen King, part Parks and Rec. In the end it's just a formula for great new genre that mixes laughs with creeps without skimping on either. Literally the best written thing on TV right now. Apple TV might be hit and miss, but when they hit, they hit.

Fun, low key, old-school horror. More of horror shows like this, and less of shows such as Obsession that is twisted, violent and classless.

Widow’s Bay is one of those rare series that never seems entirely sure whether it wants to be a supernatural mystery, a horror story, or an offbeat comedy. That blend doesn’t always click, but it does give the show an identity of its own. Matthew Rhys is the biggest reason I stayed invested. He consistently grounds even the stranger moments with a believable performance that gives the series an emotional center. As a fellow Knoxville native, I also appreciated seeing Dale Dickey continue doing what she’s done throughout her career: managing to elevate every scene she’s in, even when the role doesn’t offer much screen time. The show’s efficiency helps as well. At around forty minutes per episode, each chapter moves quickly, even if the pacing isn’t always perfect. Still, I don’t think Widow’s Bay fully earns the level of praise it received. Much of the first season suffers from uneven momentum, and that kept me from becoming as invested as I hoped. The series does gradually settle into itself, though, finishing on a stronger run of episodes than it begins with. I’m not convinced it will ever become one of my favorites, but it did enough to avoid being a disappointment. Widow’s Bay is a show I can recommend with caution, and I’m curious enough to keep watching when its second season arrives.

Apple TV’s “Widow’s Bay” is a wonderfully weird cocktail of small town comedy, supernatural horror, and eccentric characters. Actor Matthew Rhys anchors the madness perfectly, while the show effortlessly jumps from laugh out loud absurdity to genuinely creepy moments. Season 1 is strange, unpredictable, and refreshingly original, feeling like Parks and Recreation wandered into a Stephen King nightmare. The show follows a mayor of a small land locked fishing town who desperately wants to make it a travel destination for yuppies. However, his dreams are dashed when he finds out the island harbors a curse along with a few of dangerous monsters. The best episode of the season is the “slasher” episode that pays homage to “Friday the 13th.” Widow’s Bay has enough scares and laughs to keep things balanced enough for casual viewers looking for something new to binge. One of the best new streaming shows of the year!

    Does not work

    This series is not working
  • Starts off mysterious and genuinely intriguing

Widow’s Bay starts surprisingly well. It’s beautifully filmed, atmospheric, eerie, and the mystery is genuinely intriguing. For a while, it feels like the show actually knows where it’s going. It doesn’t. Somewhere halfway through, the plot drives off a cliff and decides that complete nonsense is a substitute for clever writing. By the final episodes, logic has left the building and the story is basically running around unsupervised. Which is a shame, because visually the series is excellent. Great locations, strong atmosphere, polished cinematography - all wrapped around an increasingly ridiculous script. It starts like a mystery worth solving and ends like a joke with no punchline. Beautifully shot. Completely derailed.

CAIT’S PICK: Matthew Rhys, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series

(Cait, Co-President) Matthew Rhys can do anything. It may just be an opinion, but it is one I think a lot of people share. That said, I’ve never seen him do what he does in Widow’s Bay. He walks a line of comedy, drama, and horror with ease – transitioning from one to another seeming ease. My only fear for him in this category is it being considered “comedy” when it is so much more than that. I also REALLY want to hear this acceptance speech.
