- Rarely give a 5 star but Boondock Saints deserves more than 5. The great thing about this movie is that it was an underdog from the word go. The acting carries the movie in such a way you identify with everything that is going on that the characters are doing. You want to like them because they are the underdogs. You want to love them because they’re doing what everybody wants to do. Willem give such a performance that if this wasn’t a blockbuster exclusive when it came out, he would’ve been nominated for an Oscar. All the actors give performances that make you become one with the movie. Sean gives a performance almost as good as what he did Powder. Norman gives the fun and quiet yet seriousness we would learn of course later on in his career with other things he’s done. Rocco. Well Rocco is just the greatest. And a nice guy in person. Comedy action, adventure the movie has it all. The only thing you kind of wish is that they wouldn’t have put Ron Jeremy in it. When I was a store manager for Blockbuster, I had a whole section dedicated to this because I had so many copies on VHS. And when I started telling people about it and how great it was, I made them put back that horrible Blair witch project and they were all renting this. This is one of the greatest movies that anybody could ever want to watch because it really gives you a little bit of everything and the story is just fantastic.
- Troy Duffy’s Boondock Saints is one of the last truly great masculine action comedies of the 20th century. The film is bloody, unapologetic, ballsy, and a true love letter to vigilante justice. Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery breathe life into Connor and Murphy, their bond as brothers stronger than steel and laced with humor, heart, and holy vengeance. And then there’s Willem Dafoe—utterly unhinged, brilliant, and unforgettable as FBI agent Paul Smecker. He dances on the line between genius and madness like no one else could. The film is soaked in stylized violence, Tarantino-esque flashbacks, and a hauntingly epic soundtrack that gives each gunfight a kind of poetic finality. The jokes and social commentary would make most ultra sensitive woke generation of today wet their pants and reach in anger for their keyboards….
- If you are looking classic style acting or an emotional breathtaking film, please stop reading and move on nothing to see here! This is a great low budget cheesy action film. Was the acting great (no), was Oscar worthy (no)...This is a simple movie with a simple plot. However it is well worth the time. Sean Patrick Flanery, Norman Reedus and Willem Dafoe work very well together. This film takes nothing serious, but it works. Dafoe character seems one that he was born to play (an over the top over acted peace of brilliance).
- Rough around the edges but weirdly memorable. It’s got that late-night, cult-movie feel where you can tell they just went for it, no overthinking. Some parts are kinda ridiculous, but it owns that energy instead of apologizing for it. The real standout is Willem Dafoe—completely unhinged in the best way, and easily the most entertaining thing on screen. Not everything clicks, but the personality is strong enough that you don’t really mind.
- The film attempted to include numerous elements that were deliberately intended to elevate it to cult status. Unfortunately, with too much infantilized humor that might amuse teenagers at best, the ‘cult’ elements turn out to be kitsch, and the pastiche becomes cringe-worthy. At one point (in the very same film!), Dafoe’s character becomes a self-parody. In the style of Tarantino’s cinema? Just as a soy burger is in the style of a real Angus beef burger.
