Where to Watch Night of the Reaper
- Slashing its way at us via the horror streaming service, Shudder, comes the 80s throwback slasher “Night of the Reaper.” Now I have said in the past I am kind of sick of these 80s throwbacks piggybacking off of Stranger Things that was piggybacking off of Spielberg, but honestly this film surprised me. The plot is standard slasher. A masked serial killer attacking women and teenage babysitters. But then the killer adds another wrinkle to their method. He films it and leaves the tapes around like a sick game for the authorities. To go into much more than that would be giving away too much of the story which is worth sitting through if nothing else for the plot twist at the end that serves up some bloody goodness. For some it might be predictable but I found it to be well acted, good gore scenes, and characters you actually like. Which for a slasher movie is always a plus. Night of the Reaper will have you guessing until the end and leave you gleefully satisfied. Hunt this one down on streaming!
- Lots of dead dogs in this so be forewarned. It happens off screen but there are quite a few. This is a pretty solid little thriller. I was expecting more of a slasher film, but that's okay. The kill count is pretty low, unless you count dogs. It feels more like House of the Devil in terms of pacing. Some scenes are intense and it relies more on dread and atmosphere than jump scares. I don't want to give anything away other than the dead dogs. Watch if you are more in the mood for a psychological thriller than a traditional slasher.
- The best thing about this movie is the '80s nostalgia, even though there isn't much more than a brief MTV moment, and the use of VHS tapes throughout. It's filmed well, but the story is merely so-so at best. There's nothing really scary about it. At best, I'd say this is one of those films you have playing in the background during a Halloween party.
- We have us an old-fashioned case of Horror who done it going on, and it doesn't look good for our local authorities. What a vile person this Killer is, and it's too bad our main character is an amazing thinker. I hate to say it, but I'm very impressed with this "who done it" film. They actually had from the go, and I'm very surprised and freaking overjoyed at the outcome...
