Arkham Asylum has been destroyed, and all its inmates have been unleashed upon Gotham City. As Batman races to round up some of his greatest enemies, he is pushed to his physical and mental limits and into a final confrontation with a new threat: the man called Bane!
Happy to see DC finally adapt the Knightfall saga, and seeing our boy Tim Drake in his classic 90's debut costume is a treat. He's not Dick-Tim, he's not Jason-Tim. He's finally, after all these years, just TIM.
Surprised Anson Mount voices Bruce/Batman. He does alright. There's been worse. The adaptation is mostly true to my memory except for the climactic scene where Bane breaks the Bat. I don't want to spoil exactly how but it differs from the original in a way that disappointed me so I can't give it a higher rating.
Movie is great and you should watch it but my complaint is with the titling; two colons, a hyphen, and a numerical "Part"? They should have just made it a miniseries and called it Knightfall.
Oracle, get me the number one of the Warner brothers, I have to lodge a complaint.
Batman: Knightfall Part 1.
I read the original comic way back when, so I’m not going to dwell too much on storyline changes or how faithful the adaptation is. I simply don’t remember enough of it.
But the animation?
Holy crap.
The attention to detail is incredible. The shadows are not just there to make everything look darker. They work across the characters’ bodies and faces, and you can actually see Batman being burned down to the bone.
By the middle of the movie, he looks exhausted. Then weaker. Then slower. Then he starts getting beaten up by criminals who normally would barely slow him down.
And that is where this movie really works.
Yes, Batman may jump from enemy to enemy a little too quickly, but watching him slowly collapse physically and mentally is fantastic. It genuinely feels like watching a comic book come alive on screen.
And of course, this is Bane’s story. First he breaks Batman mentally. Then spiritually. Then comes the GRAND FINALE.
He breaks the man like a wooden toothpick.
We all knew it was coming, but that actual fight scene still delivers.
This movie was somebody’s pride.
You can see it in every frame.
Thanks for reading.
Absolutely spectacular. I love the background and character of Bane. I also really enjoyed us having Tim Drake as our Robin. We get to see more of his intelligence and detective skills we learn from the comics.
Can’t wait for Part 2.
the extra half star is solely for how well they treated my sweet boy tim in the adaptation. i’ve never been a massive fan of kelley jones’ costume designs, though i think his propensity for designing atmospheric compositions has undeniable aura. i don’t think his designs translate well to animation, but the story is so entertainingly adapted that i kind of didn’t care for how unflattering the images could be at times. the last act of the film genuinely felt like a horror movie in certain moments, and despite knowing the knightfall story so well i still felt tangible fear for my bat family. i’m excited to see how they adapt the rest of the narrative and i wish the next two entries came sooner.
Best Batman animated movie in a long time. Great adaptation of the comic and ansom Mount is fantastic.
My god... Talk about being absolute cinema! This is hands down the best DC animated movie yet. I can't wait for the other two parts. My only issues with this movie is I won't be able to watch it with my kids. It's way to dark
What a Movie! How is it storylines are better written and adapted by the animation team at DC Studios? Howwww? Sure it's a lot more chill and grounded in comparison to the other DC Animated Universe, but still. Can't wait for Knight Quest.
The animation in Batman: Knightfall is absolutely amazing. It honors the distinctive styles of comic book artists Norm Breyfogle and Kelley Jones who drew most of the Knightfall comic book run. Spiked shoulder pads on Batman? CHECK!
And then there’s Bane. His origin is given real weight, while his transformation into a calculating, rampaging madman makes him every bit the terrifying physical and psychological threat he should be. This Bane doesn’t just want to beat Batman. He wants to break him.
The action is brutal, nasty, and gloriously gory. And thankfully, nobody gets lost in the Bat shadow. Dick Grayson gets to shine as the new Robin, while Azrael arrives as a genuinely unhinged new crime fighter who makes Batman look downright well adjusted.
Does the movie blaze through the Knightfall storyline at a breakneck pace? Absolutely. Blink and you might miss three plot points and someone’s vertebrae.
But somehow, it works.
Batman: Knightfall may be rushing through one of Batman’s most iconic stories, but it packs in fantastic animation, vicious action, great character moments, and a wonderfully unhinged Bane. It’s easily some of the best DC animated content we’ve seen in quite some time.
