In the pantheon of horror, A Nightmare on Elm Street stands tall as a genre-defining classic. The film introduces Freddy Krueger, a sinister figure who haunts the dreams of teenagers in Springwood. As we follow Nancy Thompson and her friends desperately trying to stay awake to evade Krueger’s razor-gloved grasp, Wes Craven blurs the lines between dreams and reality. Craven masterfully crafts a tale where the dream world becomes a terrifyingly real nightmare, forever haunting audiences and changing the horror landscape. For me, this was the film that sparked my love for horror. Watching A Nightmare on Elm Street as a kid (way too young to be watching it, to be fair) introduced me to the genre’s allure—its ability to terrify and captivate. Freddy Krueger became the face of my horror initiation, setting a high bar for scares and atmosphere. The film’s use of practical effects, which feel a bit dated now, remains a charming testament to the ingenuity of the era. The absence of CGI lends the film an authenticity that horror enthusiasts still cherish. A Nightmare on Elm Street is a nostalgic trip back to horror’s golden age and a landmark in the genre. This film will be popular with people who like Friday the 13th and Halloween.

As a kid born in the 70s and watching horror thru the 80s and 90s A nightmare on elm Street is probably now considered a cult classic in anyone's eyes. Wes craven has manifested and conceived a true horror icon figure with Freddy Krueger. As much as this movie might not be as scary as some modern films you need to realise that this film was made in 1984 so put yourself in that timeline and you will realise just how epic it is.

“You whack the fucker.” The original delivers inventive kills, a haunting dream world atmosphere, and one of the most iconic horror villains ever created. It’s stylish, scary, and still feels fresh decades later. A true genre classic.

A Nightmare on Elm Street is an iconic slasher film that planted the seeds for all of the slasher film that came after. Positives: - The movie contains one of the most unique concepts for a horror movie ever - This movie spawned one of the most iconic horror franchises and iconic horror icon ever - The film flat out is only practical effects which is awesome. All of the kills look great, and there are so many well done shots in the film that look so great for it’s time - The kills again look great and are really gory - Freddy Kruger is horrifying and is portrayed so well by Robert Englund - The rest of the cast does a great job as well - The characters are likeable - This movie introduced us to Johnny Depp - The score is chillingly good - The movie can be quotable at times Negatives: - The ending is really weird and confusing and feels out of nowhere but it doesn’t effect the movie as a whole for me Overall A Nightmare on Elm Street is a horror classic that I love and recommend to all horror fans.

One of the most important movies for supernatural horror, and gave a new dimension to slasher movies that were dominating the era. Robert Englund’s acting made him an icon for a reason.

This is a very good and artistic movie from the 1980's. The plot line is very original than you would think such as a killer who kills you in your sleep while wearing a bladed glove which is known as Freddy Krueger. This is one of my number 1 favorite horror film of all. Plus the fact, Freddy Krueger is also my number 1 favorite horror icon along with other villains. The film happens to have dark tones and Freddy Kruger himself is a evil being that stalks people your sleep but can even be pulled out into the real world. But with that said, I love this film cause it has frikin Freddy in it. Giving this 5 stars.

Not an ounce of fat. Not big into the horror genre but the 80’s effects and Langenkamp’s cuteness kept me engaged. I get the hype.

This is a 10/10 genre-defining classic. Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) is an undisputed classic & a genre-defining masterpiece. This film doesn’t just hold up, it continues to tower over horror even decades later. The story is brilliant, centered on the uniquely terrifying concept of a villain who stalks his victims in their dreams. Freddy Krueger is more than just another slasher; his ability to warp reality into surreal, cartoonishly wild & psychedelic nightmare sequences makes every kill inventive & unpredictable, turning the movie into a twisted funhouse. The practical effects are outstanding due to the lack of CGI in the era everything had to be practical & they still hold up impressively well even against today’s standards. Casting was virtually perfect: nobody could play Freddy better than Robert Englund, it’s fascinating that the role was actually reshaped after his audition. Originally written as a larger, brute-type killer, Freddy became smaller but far more menacing thanks to Englund’s performance. Add to that the early first appearances of future stars like Johnny Depp & Lin Shaye, this film essentially launching careers overnight. What really set Freddy apart & changed horror forever was that he wasn’t just a mute, unstoppable killer like Michael Myers or Jason Voorhees. He had personality, wit & sadistic charisma. Freddy talked to his victims, taunted them & enjoyed the game. That shift introduced the idea of a horror villain who wasn’t just a force of nature, but a character; one audiences could almost love to hate, paving the way for more personality-driven villains in horror. On top of that, the nostalgic throwback to late 70s/early 80s lingo, the tech of the era (TVs, phones, radios, cars, clothes) & the whole aesthetic add even more charm. Honestly, even its flaws are part of the magic I’d be nitpicking to call them issues. A perfect 10/10. Not only does it belong in the horror/slasher hall of fame, it was one of the early genre-defining films that changed horror forever & paved the way for the “superpower-like” kills we’ve come to love in the decades since.

The beginnings of the greatest horror franchise and Wes Craven’s status as the master. Story often overlooked can elevate the genre and this film and franchise is proof. Ps if you make it to the seventh instalment and don’t think Wes Craven can bookend the shit out things you might be underestimating his genius! Heather and Robert as characters intellectual shit the bed levels of clever! This opening film is well worth the watch, don’t skip 2 but know they didn’t figure out what they had until 3 :)
  • A legendary horror with one of the most popular slasher killers of the 80s-90s. The beginning of this franchise turned out to be more than successful, an original idea with a mysterious maniac and an atmosphere, it is in this part that the intrigue of horror is most sustained.
