- Shutter Island
I miss the time where a good thriller was at your fingertips. Better yet - when movie night with the family meant something. I was young when I first saw this, so I’m sure an heir of nostalgia allows my memory to highly favor this movie BUT it is a great watch. Although the twists seem predictable, if you’re watching it for the first time I strongly believe that you will be THRILLED. That is the whole point, isn’t it?Shutter Island - Stranger Than Fiction
When movies were actually original. If you love Will Ferrell, you’ll love the situation he’s thrown into for this film - a creative premise, held up by great acting. He is shoved into a serious role, surrounded by satirical, sarcastic comedy. It’s dry, it’s sweet - it’s a good one.Stranger Than Fiction - Prisoners
Now this is how you do a detective/crime thriller. This is something that only the 2010s could produce. I love the cast, I love the acting, and there were enough twists and turns to keep me interested through the 2 hour + run time. I wish I could watch this movie again for the first time. Hugh Jackman puts on a masterclass on how to portray a heartbroken father, whose only objective in life is to figure out what he did wrong. He is deranged, slowly descending into madness through the duration of the film. Gyllenhaal deserves his flowers for this one, as well. He is a diamond, as usual. I would recommend this movie every time I get the chance. It is HEAVY.Prisoners - Inglourious Basterds
This movie has gotten so many mixed reviews. I’ll be honest - I don’t understand any reviews that don’t favor this one. This is a top, top pick for me. A satirical comedy, with expensive suspense that will truly have you on the edge of your seat. I’d have to consider this a classic; phenomenal acting, immersive story telling, and an ending that will have you giving a standing ovation to the screen. 5/5; 10/10. Please watch this if you haven’t.Inglourious Basterds - Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood
I don’t think anybody could make me hate Quentin Tarantino. This film, centered around our first-time on screen duo (which is hard to believe!) makes for incredible acting, in an immersive world, where history is rewritten before our very eyes. The era and location in which this movie is based makes for unlikely cameos. I loved it. I watched this in theaters, and couldn’t wait for it to release at home to give it another few viewings! Watch it, for sure.Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood - Snatch
I don’t even think I know where to start here - an incredible journey, incredible world-building, incredible cast. I have not one bad thing to say about this movie. If you’re a fan of great movies, chances are you’ve seen this. If you haven’t, do so immediately. Whenever I have a conversation about movies with someone new, I always (without fail) recommend this one. Just an overall amazing time. You won’t regret it.Snatch - The Iron Giant
Let’s address the giant robot in the room - 5 stars based solely on nostalgia. I haven’t seen this movie in years, but as a kid it was a constant rewatch. The characters in this movie are top notch - and to say I cried would be an understatement. Our Superman has an incredible way of creeping into your heart through this film’s short run time, with an ironic childlike zest that goes against his very programming. I could watch this film any day, and will definitely be showing this one to my kids. The Iron Giant - John Wick
I liked it. Action from beginning to end. I have to be honest - I’m not exactly sure why all the hype surrounded this movie upon release. It’s a good movie, don’t get me wrong. It seems like they had a pretty large budget, and the action (that’s exactly what this franchise is known for) is great. The actors that are cast in supporting roles are good, but acting was not the focus here. Many cool scenes - for me, the club scene was my fav. I love Keanu, and I’ll be honest when I say that his acting is not top tier; he does possess a solid screen presence, and has been fortunate enough to have roles in recent years that utilize that to their advantage.John Wick - It
Thoroughly enjoyed this film. The anticipation for each scare kept me on the edge of my seat. The eerie feeling when everything is a bit too quiet, or going a bit too well for the home team, was captivating. Bill Skarsgard is one hell of an actor, and Pennywise is a larger than life (literally) villain that I’ve come to love and appreciate throughout the entire franchise. With that being said, this movie can be a standalone watch for anyone interested in the horror genre. It - Euphoria (US)
Man, I miss this show. Sunday nights haven’t been the same since Euphoria stopped releasing. I thoroughly enjoyed the show and drama - it’s a bit weird when you take a step back and realize that these kids are supposed to be high schoolers. The show works as a super edgy, gritty teen drama - and the characters are all somewhat likeable.Euphoria (US)
