Probably the best Resident Evil movie we will ever get. The plot is strong, we have a main character you really feel for, it has elegantly crafted reoccurring imaginary and themes and cleverly crafted scares. But at the same time it isn't afraid to poke some fun at some the RE franchises goofy aspects in the form of (what I felt to be) a great satire of the average Umbrella employee. The film's shots, special effects and the re-imaging of the typical Resident Evil zombies are well executed. It was wonderful viewing experience in theaters. But be warned, our main character is no Leon Kennedy or Clare Redfield...
I thought the plot and characters were great overall but it does have its few silly moments that take me out a little bit...like the chainsaw bit...
There's a couple off colored jokes and I (personally) don't like Ed but I think it otherwise holds up! Its funny, the plot doesn't drag along, and it clearly has a deep understanding of the zombie genre and so works are great satire. The first 15 minutes of the film is a fantastic set up and was my favorite part of the movie.
A thoroughly scary movie that ramps up in action as it goes along. It doesn't drag its feet to get the scares and tells a coherent story. I'm glad it actually explains itself instead of implying off camera. The acting was very natural. The segments featuring Deborah wondering around the house and outside were my favorite.
The acting isn't the best, especially at the end. Most of it consists of boring travel segments. I don't see the connection between the haunted house thread and what actually ends up happening, it feels like there a piece missing. Characters react to things to happening off camera but we don't ever get to see it so there aren't many real scares in this movie. This film would have worked better if it was shorter.
Very well executed found-footage! Characters behave believably and despite the little time spent with them, you get a good grasp of them. Setting is cramp and eerie but still feels lived in. Lots of scares and ground work laid to foreshadow events.
As a stand alone show it's okay, the zombies have a lot of inconsistencies. The real weak point is some of the very cringe dialouge, it mostly fixes itself by the end but leaves a bad first impression that might stop people from finishing it. It seems they were going for satire of both ends of the political spectrum but given that this show wasn't particularly funny, it doesn't work. Rears more into interpersonal drama more than anything. As a Day of the Dead piece though? Very poor, only a few callbacks to the ordinal flim. Nothing here screams Day of the Dead aside from their version of Bub. There are parts of this show where zombies don't die unless burned and body parts move on their own which was Return of the Living Dead thing and not a Day of the Dead thing. It almost felt like they forgot which franchise this was for. Quality of the camera work and special effects does show that capable people worked on this, shame the writing isn't up to par.
The remake keeps the premise of the original but cranks the violence up to 11. Instead of the perspective being split the survivors and the military, it is purely on the survivors and the infected. Who in this version are always violent and look visibly sick. (which kinda kills the whole "can't tell the difference between revolting healthy and sick" thing going on in the first...) The pacing in this movie is much faster than the original.
The Crazies' focus is less on the infected people (who aren't really zombies, some of them aren't even violent) and more on the army. Who are neglectful, make poor choices, and outright cruel to citizens. About half of this film is dedicated to them, so if you don't like heavy speaking segments, this might not be good for you. Much of the action is gun fights. Blood and gore are light. The Crazies may not be mind blowing but it's a pleasant watch.
Biohazardous.
