In postwar Vienna, Austria, Holly Martins, a writer of pulp Westerns, arrives penniless as a guest of his childhood chum Harry Lime, only to learn he has died. Martins develops a conspiracy theory after learning of a "third man" present at the time of Harry's death, running into interference from British officer Major Calloway, and falling head-over-heels for Harry's grief-stricken lover, Anna.

  • When movies were truly art. From the soundtrack, to the dialogue, to the acting and the cinematography.

I think this film is overrated. To me it's very slow moving and convoluted, hard to follow completely. Not very beautiful backdrops or camera framing either, which makes it come off as gritty and uncomfortable.
  • Carol Reed’s 1949 noir is a shadowy, masterfully executed masterpiece of moral ambiguity and betrayal. Powered by striking expressionistic visuals, Orson Welles’ magnetic performance, and an unforgettable zither score, it remains one of the greatest films ever made.

It’s a very good film, with an intriguing noir-style plot set in post-war Vienna. The cinematography deserves top marks, though to be honest, we’ve seen it all before – it’s a reflection of a fascination with German Expressionism. Alida Valli was excellent, whereas personally I don’t really feel the greatness of Orson Welles (though, to be fair, he didn’t have much to do here). And finally: the music in this film is a real nightmare.

This is a fine film, maybe too easy to predict if you’re into Sherlock Holmes. I have trouble here, I realise the cultural impact of this film but even for noir or detective film, I think Hitchcock still surpasses all. Modern audiences will definitely not like this, it’s not something that we have not already seen, and cinephiles will prefer Hitchcock.
