Where to Watch The Jackal
- The cast is easily the best thing about it. Sidney Poitier brings some real class to the movie, Bruce Willis clearly has fun with all the disguises, and Richard Gere has that huge 90s movie-star presence. There are some cool locations, gadgets and decent action scenes too, so it’s never completely boring. I just wish the movie itself had been as good as the people in it. It feels like they’re playing everything way too safe, taking almost no chances and relying heavily on three huge names to carry it. The tension comes and goes, the story gets pretty ridiculous in places, and the Jackal doesn’t always come across as the brilliant assassin he’s supposed to be. Gere’s accent is also rough, while some of the supporting characters feel pretty thin. Still watchable, but with that cast and premise, it should have been a lot more memorable.
- I had seen some fairly negative reviews about this film and as the "Day of the Jackal" is very high in my estimation, I was expecting to watch something less than excellent. I was astounded to find that "The Jackal" is at least as good and in some respects better. The production values greatly transform the film; the budget was well spent and the result is total credibility. A strong cast helps; Willis is brilliant as the cold, chameleon-like central character. Poitier and of course Gere are equally superb. Jack Black is at home with the role of technological wizard; who of course has an Achilles heel; as his hippy, cool persona reveals. Highly recommended.
