Exceptionally ambitious high schooler Matthew has aspirations for a career in politics when he falls in love with his gorgeous 19-year-old neighbor, Danielle. But Matthew's bright future is jeopardized when he finds Danielle was once a porn star. As Danielle's past catches up with her, Matthew's love for her forces him to re-evaluate his goals.
Loved the story. Very sweet. The acting was good.
That's really not the girl next door. Elisha is far beyond 'next door.'
Made better by Paul Dano’s appearance: Tarantino continues to be wrong
(Using two perfect references from the last month) it’s Hardcore meets Miss March
As the resident cool dude due to having a pool, I got to use and see used that “I’m all wet. Can I come in?” line no less than 100 times in high school
Haven’t seen this in 20 years. I suspect it was quite foundational to how I thought high school and college would be! Also in incorporating partying into my personality to be more cool!
Some genuinely great shit in this that holds up, and then the other stuff!
Solid but superficial takes on how women are viewed as sex objects by men, especially since they don’t mind doing it as part of the background lol
Remar, Olyphant, and even Hirsch are all killing it but Elisha is honestly superb in her role
I have a recurring dream where I give a Valedictorian speech hammered and kill it. Gonna assume that’s from this
Exceptional soundtrack. Baba O’Reilly ending will always stick with me
Such a funny climactic conundrum. “Which horny high schooler has to take the hit by sleeping with the gorgeous adult film star?”
So incredible. An amazing piece of work.
The rando constantly saying crass things and genuinely being in love with Samnang was amazing
Cuthbert is wow. And this is a little more than your average late night comedy.
He found a way to change her, her circle, and even his own circle of acquaintances. A very good film!
The script and editing actively fight the attempt to make it thoughtful.
Rewatching it after 20 years or so what really pops is the music though.
Hard to decide if it's good or bad.
Add 20 years onto risky business and you get 'the girl next door'. It's a fun story with likeable characters if you can suspend disbelief on the premise
amazing changed perspective on life lowk and danielle is bad asl😂😭
There are movies that walk into the room quietly… and then there are movies like The Girl Next Door that kick the door open, flash a grin, and somehow charm your brain and your hormones at the same time.
Directed by Luke Greenfield, this film pretends to be a simple teen comedy… but underneath that glossy surface is something smarter, sharper, and way more self-aware than it has any right to be.
🧠 Smarter Than It Looks
At first glance, you think you're signing up for a classic “awkward guy meets insanely hot neighbor” story. And sure, that’s the hook. But what makes this movie stand out is how it plays with expectations.
Emile Hirsch as Matthew starts off as your typical rule-following overachiever, but the journey he goes through? It’s basically a coming-of-age story wrapped in chaos, bad decisions, and some wild life lessons.
It’s like someone took a teen comedy, injected it with actual character growth, and then sprinkled in just enough madness to keep you guessing.
🔥 Elisha Cuthbert = Absolute Scene-Stealer
Let’s be honest here… Elisha Cuthbert doesn’t just play Danielle — she owns the movie.
She’s not just “the hot girl next door” cliché. She’s confident, playful, unpredictable, and surprisingly layered. One moment she’s seductive and teasing, the next she’s emotionally grounded and real.
And yes… super sexy doesn’t even begin to cover it. But what makes her performance work is that she never feels shallow. There’s personality behind the allure, and that’s what makes it stick.
😂 Chaos, Comedy, and Just Enough Insanity
This movie runs on a kind of controlled chaos energy. You’ve got:
Unhinged road trips 🚗💨
Questionable life choices 😅
A hilariously intimidating villain played by Timothy Olyphant
And moments that make you go: “Wait… how did we get here??”
But somehow it all works. It’s funny without trying too hard, and the absurdity never completely breaks the story.
💡 The Secret Sauce
What makes The Girl Next Door hit differently is that it’s not just about fantasy — it’s about stepping outside your comfort zone.
Underneath all the wild moments, it quietly says:
“Maybe playing it safe isn’t the same as living.”
And that message lands harder than you’d expect from a movie that also includes… well… everything else it includes 😄
⭐ Final Verdict
Think of it as:
A teen comedy 🎓
A coming-of-age story 🌱
A slightly unhinged adventure 🤪
And a surprisingly heartfelt ride 💙
All rolled into one.
Rating: 8.5/10 🟢
Smart, funny, bold… and powered by one of the most memorable performances of the early 2000s.
