Where to Watch The Demented
- Top badass moment? Well if you can’t decide the best ending for your film… A group of six friends go to stay in what’s effectively a cabin in the woods and then freak out when something bad happens. I’m sorry, but you’ve only got yourselves to blame. Like the links between smoking and lung cancer, and fossil fuels and Climate Change, the connection between isolated buildings, groups of teens and either zombies or the undead and their friends, has been well-established by the scientific community for years. Like parachute jumping or rock climbing, it doesn’t impress anyone, it just makes you look kind of stupid. Why did they get into such a panic when they heard the news about a terrorist attack in the Gulf Coast area? I mean, it’s a massive place and they didn’t seem to be anywhere terrorists would be likely to want to target, unless they’re anti-ecologically-diverse-area terrorists who especially hate low-lying coastal marshes that support a wide range of plant and animal species. I used to live in Belfast and when you heard something go bang, you just shrugged and got on with things. But it wasn’t all bad. For a start we get turbo-charged zombies, who behave a lot like the drivers of cars who overtake cyclists too closely and then get pissed-off when the responses from the cyclists are ‘hand gestures’ that they spot in their rear-mirrors. (In a heartbeat they go from virtually comatose and barely able (obviously) to steer properly, to incandescent with fury.) I know, I ride a bicycle and drive for a living - I hate everyone on the road! And they do get to trash a nice Jeep, too. I guess that’s where most of the budget went - I do appreciate it and it’s why I’m trying to be nice when I say the CGI could have been a little better - I think it was probably rendered on an abacus. The slow parts reminded me of a rubbish episode of “The Walking Dead”, whilst the fast bits made me feel a bit sea- sick, what with all the wobbly-cam and screaming. Unfortunately, using “From the co-producer of…” as a marketing tag line on the front cover of the DVD reeks of desperation. Why not the caterer or security guard? And I’m pretty sure the girl on the sleeve had no more than one second of screen time; in fact I’m not sure she was even in it. Actually there’s nothing on the front sleeve that resembles anything seen in the film at all. Technically it’s fine (except the cheap CGI); the plot’s reasonable; the script’s adequate; and the acting’s adequate too. But I didn’t get bored and it had a few nice bits, but not very many. I just didn't get very emotionally engaged with it and I didn’t especially care much for any of the characters either. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.
