Where to Watch The Dark Knight
- For all the films I've watched since, nothing has reached The Dark Knight. Christopher Nolan takes Batman's mythology and builds a sprawling crime epic around it, using Gotham to explore what happens when the idea of order is pushed hard enough to reveal how fragile order really is. The film can move from a bank robbery to an argument of morality without either feeling out of place, and somehow the enormous scale only makes the quieter moments more effective. Wally Pfister's IMAX cinematography gives Gotham a physical presence that no blockbuster has managed to capture before, while Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard's score keeps a constant pressure underneath everything, particularly whenever that unnerving Joker theme begins to creep in. It is an astonishingly controlled piece of filmmaking considering just how much Nolan is responsible for holding together. Then, there is Heath Ledger. What can I say? This is simply the greatest acting performance I have ever witnessed on film. His Joker isn't frightening simply because of what he does, but because Ledger makes him feel completely comfortable doing it. There is an unnerving calm behind the character's unpredictability that makes every scene with him feel dangerous. Christian Bale's Batman is forced to confront that chaos without losing the moral line that separates him from the person standing across from him. I set The Dark Knight as my absolute standard for what a movie could achieve, and after nearly a thousand films since then, nothing has managed to replace it. Its ideas about morality, sacrifice, and human nature have reached far beyond the film itself and become part of the culture surrounding it. For me, The Dark Knight remains an untouchable masterpiece and the rare movie that has somehow lived up to every bit of its reputation.
- Ask Yourself Why. Why a letter exists full of anthrax addressed to Tom Brokaw that wishes the worst upon two very specific countries. Ask Yourself Why when the United Nations voted to make food a human right were two very specific countries, those same two countries from the letter, the only ones to vote no. Ask Yourself Why all over this country we are flying two flags. Ask Yourself Why Silverstein wasn't at work that day. Ask Yourself Why he insisted to up the appraisal. Ask Yourself Why there's no remnants of a plane at the Pentagon. Ask Yourself Why Tower Seven fell due to structural blah blah blah. Ask Yourself Why three buildings made history that day. Ask Yourself Why black boxes made to withstand the pressure of the ocean, explosions, fire would disappear, but passports made of paper would survive. Ask Yourself Why. Wake up. It's time. @JokerOftt
