A street-wise kid, Mark Sway, sees the suicide of Jerome Clifford, a prominent Louisiana lawyer, whose current client is Barry 'The Blade' Muldano, a Mafia hit-man. Before Jerome shoots himself, he tells Mark where the body of a Senator is buried. Clifford shoots himself and Mark is found at the scene, and both the FBI and the Mafia quickly realize that Mark probably knows more than he says.

The Client Not the best adaptation of John Grisham’s book, but still an entertaining legal thriller with a surprisingly stacked cast. Watching it now, half the fun is recognizing actors who were nowhere near as famous back then. Anthony Edwards even shows up for what feels like two sentences before apparently heading straight back to ER. Brad Renfro can be exasperating. The constant anger, arguing, and defiance wore on me at times. But I have to give him credit where it is due: he and Susan Sarandon are genuinely great together, and their chemistry gives the movie much of its heart. Sarandon is easily the strongest part of the film. Tommy Lee Jones, meanwhile, almost becomes comic relief. Roy Foltrigg is supposed to be this formidable U.S. Attorney, yet Reggie Love repeatedly handles him like a law graduate on his first internship. Jones plays the arrogance perfectly, but Sarandon’s character is usually three steps ahead of him. It is a competent movie with a very good cast, but the book gives the story more weight than the adaptation manages to capture. Still worth watching, especially just to see how many familiar faces were hiding in this movie before they became familiar. Thanks for reading.
