Four Coney Island dreamers chase love, fame, and escape, but addiction and obsession begin to distort their hopes for a better life.
- This is a brilliant film albeit one I don't rewatch very often. It's pretty dark from the start and ends about as dark as a movie could end. This is an underdog tale with no montage that leads us to victory. The acting is top notch. Ellen Burstyn is amazing. Jennifer Connelly is beautiful and you just want to help her find peace. Jared Leto is not on my list of great actors but credit where it's due --he nailed it. What's cool about movies is they can bring out emotions of all kinds but so often there's triumph in the end or some kind of hope. You won't find that here. It's like life and the thing about that is that not everyone gets a happy ending.
- Saw it with my ex wife soon to be fiance. Working in addiction. a short while into it. THIS MOVIE Is the Grandes look into functionality and addiction. People don't fixate on the substances. Rather understand the daily struggle. The peddlers wear many costumes. and the substances can be anything you fixate on. The only problem with This , absolute. Creative, risk and non robotic and predictable, unpredictability is I doubt we will get anything close to this gem. I also hope the actors and actresses. Everyone in the movies gravity deserved way more than they were paid. Jennifer Connelly is gorgeous and her roles after this, seemed to demand sexuality. She is a great actress.THIS IS A TOP TEN MOVIE EVER.
- Darren Aronofsky's Requiem for a Dream turns addiction into something that feels almost physically invasive. Rather than presenting its characters' addictions as a simple cautionary tale, Aronofsky traps them inside the repetitive highs and crashes that gradually take control of their lives. Matthew Libatique's restless cinematography and aggressive editing make even the brief moments of pleasure feel unstable, while the split screens and rapid montages capture the artificial rush of a quick fix. But it is Clint Mansell's score that gives the film so much of its lasting power. “Lux Aeterna” is one of the most haunting and tragic pieces of film music I've ever heard, and its swelling strings give the movie a sense of inevitability that becomes almost unbearable as everything begins falling apart. The performances are strong enough to keep all of that style grounded in something painfully human. Jared Leto and Jennifer Connelly give their characters a vulnerability that makes their eventual deterioration difficult to watch, while Ellen Burstyn is devastating as a woman whose desire for a better life slowly becomes another form of dependency. My biggest issue is that Aronofsky rarely gives the audience a moment to breathe, and the relentless misery can eventually start to feel more punishing than illuminating. Even so, the film's technical precision and willingness to completely commit to its vision are hard to dismiss. Requiem for a Dream is an exhausting film by design, but between Aronofsky's direction and Mansell's unforgettable score, it remains one of the most haunting portraits of addiction I've seen.
