Just as four cell-mates are about to launch their elaborate escape from a tiny cell, a detainee from a cell-block under repair is transferred in. The four all face certain conviction and long sentences. Does the young new jail-mate have the same incentive and if so, can they trust him?
Where to Watch Le Trou
- steadyhumAugust 10, 2026I didn’t expect to love this film as much as I did. It’s brilliant, consuming, and captivating. There’s no score and it doesn’t need one, but if there were, I’d anachronistically suggest Tom Waits’ “Way Down in the Hole.” Le Trou is about collective discipline. Every action matters, all the way to the end. It’s a film about labor, patience, and trust. It refuses sentimentality, yet the five inmates embody liberté, égalité, fraternité. Hope is built with bare hands. Solidarity withholds emotion, it’s practical. Freedom is fleeting. They own nothing but time and you feel every second of it.
