Andrew returns to his hometown for his mother’s funeral, a journey that reconnects him with old friends. The trip coincides with his decision to stop taking his powerful antidepressants. A chance meeting with Sam—a girl also struggling with various maladies—opens up the possibility of rekindling emotional connections, confronting his psychologist father, and perhaps beginning a new life.

I’m a big sucker for coming of age films and this one was pretty awesome! Great soundtrack and some great performances. Super original and different than anything else I’ve ever seen. Who wouldn’t fall in love with someone who shows you New Slang?!

This indie drama is a quiet, bittersweet gem. Quirky humor, heartfelt moments, and a dreamy soundtrack make it feel like a warm, slightly awkward hug in flannel. Still charming after all these years.

    Cringe or naw?

Do yall find this movie cringy? I don’t think it’s that bad. YouTube critics love to trash it. Watching it through for the second time, there is a lot of good stuff about it if you pay attention. So much of the emo scene in the early 2000’s really connected with this film. It’s just very time specific. The movie really hits that apathetic tone. If you’ve ever been on SSRI’s, it’ll be familiar. Some of the parts didn’t age well, but I’d still give it a 7 or 6/10.
