A true masterpiece, funny thought provoking, and deserves more acclaim.

It's a 4-star movie because it's fearless, endlessly quotable, and somehow turns religion, philosophy, crude comedy, and genuine heart into one wildly entertaining ride. The cast is phenomenal, the dialogue crackles, and it dares to ask big questions without taking itself too seriously. That said, if you judged it purely on filmmaking, it probably deserves a 3 out of 5. The pacing stumbles, the budget shows its age, some performances are uneven, and a few jokes land with the grace of a shopping cart missing a wheel. Yet those flaws somehow become part of its charm. Dogma isn't great because it's polished. It's great because it's messy, ambitious, hilarious, and completely unapologetic about what it wants to be. Sometimes personality beats perfection, much to the annoyance of film school graduates everywhere.

Such a great movie. Everyone is perfect in their roles. I watch this movie at least once per year. Always makes me smile.

Re-visited this in theatre for the re-release, having not seen it for approximately 20 years but having fond memories of it. Having seen a couple of interviews with Kevin Smith where he insists Dogma isn't meant to be an inflammatory work lambasting religion, it's really clear that that's true. Of course, he takes a lot of creative liberties with the good book as well, in the name of interesting storytelling, and he is just an irreverent storyteller by nature so it's nonetheless no surprise how much negative backlash this has seen. He also described it as a bible story by way of badass superheroes and super villains and it's easy see the overlap there for sure. This time around I was struck by how 90% of the dialogue in this thing is either exposition or a throwaway joke (the former being necessary given the marriage of high concept plot and religious mythology, the latter because Kevin Smith) but it still works because the idea and execution are just that fun, and because the other 10% of dialogue is pretty much every character getting at least one badass monologue.

Brilliant. God does approve. Why else would he give us a sense of humour?

Surely has to be Kevin Smith's best work? A sharp and earnest satire of religion with an all star cast delivering on every front.

A critical piece of movie history, with Matt & Ben, Jay & Bob somehow coexisting with their wildly different comedic styles. A little bit of dated humour, but the premise is solid, and the social commentary holds up. Light hearted and dark at the same time, just the way I like it.

Having seen Dogma many times, it’s still hilarious and smart — angels, apocalypse, and Kevin Smith’s wit never get old. Great cast, clever mix of humor and deeper themes. Finally remastered, and worth watching again!

This movie is flawless. I would give it 20 stars if I could. It is a brilliant takedown of the idiocy of organized religion without taking down the actual ideas supported by Christ. Hilarious and thought provoking.
