Dark Was the Night gets one important thing right from the very beginning: it gives us characters worth caring about. Kevin Durand delivers a strong, grounded performance as a sheriff already carrying the emotional weight of losing a child and watching his marriage fall apart. Before the monster ever appears, the movie is already drenched in sadness, giving the story a heavier emotional foundation than most creature features. Visually, I liked the filmmakers’ choice to shoot much of the movie in muted, almost monochromatic tones. Combined with the quiet pacing and isolated setting, it creates an appropriately bleak atmosphere that slowly draws you in. The film is definitely a slow burn, but I didn’t mind that. It takes its time building mystery instead of relying on constant jump scares, and the cast is strong enough to hold your attention. Unfortunately, the payoff doesn’t live up to the setup. By the final act, the story feels incomplete, as though it has run out of ideas just when it should be delivering answers. Several critics praised the atmosphere and performances while reaching the same conclusion: the ending never fully capitalizes on everything the film has carefully established. I was also disappointed by the creature itself. Rather than feeling like an ancient predator that had evolved to survive in the forest, it looked more like an extraterrestrial dropped into the wrong movie. A little more biological imagination could have made it far more believable and memorable. In the end, Dark Was the Night is easy enough to recommend to fans of slow-burning creature features because the acting and atmosphere are genuinely solid. I just wish the screenplay had been as carefully developed as the characters.
