  • "Casper," directed by Brad Silberling, goes beyond the idea of a children's comedy about a ghost who wants to make friends. Behind the funny situations and attempts to scare the living, there is a story marked by loneliness and the desire to belong somewhere. Casper is not treated merely as a funny creature, but as someone who misses companionship and longs to experience a life he can no longer have. This approach gives the film an unexpected melancholy, especially when his ghostly status ceases to be just a source of jokes and comes to represent the distance between him and the people he would like to connect with. The visual aspect also deserves highlighting, especially considering the year of release. In 1995, bringing to life a protagonist entirely created by computer graphics and making him interact with real actors represented a considerable challenge. Casper manages to convey personality through his expressions, movements, and reactions, preventing his presence from seeming like just a digital effect inserted into the scenes. Although the effects have aged in some moments, the result still holds historical importance and demonstrates the technical ambition of the production. The integration between the character and the real-life settings helps sustain the fantasy, while the art direction transforms the mansion into a space that combines the frightening aspect of a haunted house with the welcoming atmosphere necessary for the story. Christina Ricci is also fundamental to the engagement with the narrative. As Kat Harvey, she conveys the loneliness of a girl who needs to cope with change and the absence of her mother, creating an interesting parallel with Casper's situation. The relationship between the two develops naturally, and Ricci manages to react to the ghost with a spontaneity that makes the interaction convincing, even with a digitally created character. James Horner's soundtrack complements this dynamic, accompanying the most delicate moments without detracting from their simplicity. The music helps highlight the bittersweet side of the story, reinforcing the feeling that, behind the appearance of a supernatural adventure, there is also a narrative about loss and acceptance. The main problem appears in the subplot involving Carrigan Crittenden and Dibs. Played by Cathy Moriarty and Eric Idle, the two represent a much more caricatured threat, based on greed, exaggerated plans, and slapstick comedy situations. This approach contrasts sharply with the melancholy present in Casper's journey and the relationship between him and Kat. Whenever the story returns to the villains' schemes, the rhythm loses some of its delicacy and begins to rely on more conventional humor, which does not always match the themes presented. Although these moments help keep the adventure moving, the script could have found a more interesting way to integrate the main conflict with the emotional dimension that makes the film special. "Casper" finds its best moments when it allows the protagonist's loneliness to be at the center of the story, but it does not always manage to maintain the same quality in all its parts. The combination of groundbreaking visual effects, a remarkable performance by Christina Ricci, and a score by James Horner gives the production personality, while the exaggerated villains and some narrative choices limit its reach. The film possesses a sensitivity that goes beyond children's entertainment, especially when addressing the desire for friendship and the difficulties of accepting what cannot be changed. Even so, the script lacks the necessary balance to give this emotional dimension the same weight throughout the adventure, making the experience more uneven than its premise would allow.

Really good watch, will watch again, and can recommend. Look, its a "stupid kids" movie, but it lovably stupid, and legitimately funny. Plus its super dark for kids: it has a nice balance where its targeting adults that were into Casper when they were kids, hoping the parents will pass on the love to their kids. This has a great cast, to include a young Christina Ricci (by far the best actor in this). Not everyone, even the quality actors give a perfect performance, but they meet the design, goofy characters from a comic. I've watched this movie so many times, and I've never been disappointed by it.

A small treasure trove of childhood memories. Its value is more tied to the emotions it evoked in me when I watched it again than to its cinematic aspects.

Casper is a charming, heartfelt family film that perfectly blends humour, adventure, and emotional depth. The friendly ghost himself is adorable and instantly lovable, and the story carries a beautiful message about kindness, loss, and belonging. With its cosy atmosphere, fun characters, and surprisingly touching moments, Casper remains a timeless classic that’s just as enjoyable for adults as it is for kids. A truly magical watch!
