Before Get Hard, there was Big Stan 🤜🏼🥴🤛🏼 Big Stan, starring Rob Schneider, begins like a fairly conventional comedy, but it quickly finds its footing once the central premise takes over. Schneider plays a wealthy con artist who, facing an upcoming prison sentence, hires a martial-arts expert to prepare him for life behind bars. Other comedies have explored similar fish-out-of-water territory, including 2002’s The New Guy and, more directly, 2015’s Get Hard, starring Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart. The latter feels almost like an exaggerated variation on Big Stan, using the same basic idea of a privileged man desperately preparing for prison. As with many Will Ferrell comedies, however, Get Hard pushes the absurdity, vulgarity and physical humor much further. Big Stan occupies a comfortable middle ground between the comparatively youthful comedy of The New Guy and the relentlessly over-the-top approach of Get Hard. It is clearly intended for mature audiences, but it generally avoids becoming either unnecessarily gratuitous or so restrained that it feels afraid to take risks. The film balances crude humor, action and an unexpectedly sincere message about personal change, giving it more heart than its ridiculous premise initially suggests.

The first half has you worried. But once he gets in and starts making changes it becomes pretty fun. Laughed out loud a couple times.

I think it is funny. A lot better than the reviews made me think it would have been.
