The Newton family live in their comfortable home, but there seems to something missing. This "hole" is filled by a small puppy, who walks into their home and their lives. Beethoven, as he is named, grows into a giant of a dog...a St Bernard. Dr. Herman Varnick, the local vet, has a secret and horrible sideline which requires lots of dogs for experiments. Beethoven is on his list.

Beethoven is a heartwarming family classic that never fails to bring joy to viewers of all ages. The movie perfectly captures the lovable chaos that comes with having a gigantic St. Bernard as part of the family. Beethoven, with his endearing personality and mischievous antics, instantly wins hearts, becoming the star of every scene he’s in. The film balances humor, adventure, and heartfelt moments, showcasing the unbreakable bond between a family and their furry companion. The Newton family’s journey from initial hesitation to fully embracing Beethoven is both relatable and touching. Add to that a villainous subplot, and you have a well-rounded story with plenty of laughs and drama. Whether you’re a dog lover or simply in search of feel-good entertainment, Beethoven delivers with charm, fun, and a reminder of the joy pets bring into our lives. It’s a movie you’ll want to watch over and over again!

Beethoven may follow a familiar family-comedy formula, but its chaotic charm makes it easy to love. Brian Levant keeps things moving, and the bright suburban setting has the kind of early-'90s warmth that makes the movie feel nostalgic almost immediately. Charles Grodin is perfectly cast as the frustrated father trying to maintain some control while Beethoven turns the household upside down. When I was little, I saw Grodin's character as the villain because he was the one standing between the kids and the dog they loved. Watching it now, I understand him much better. The kids see the fun of having a giant dog around, while he's the one thinking about the mess and responsibility that come with it. The movie loses some momentum when it leans harder into repetitive slapstick and the cartoonish villainy of Herman Varnick. Even with that weakness, there is a warmth we all feel to watching Beethoven become the center of a family that wasn't prepared for him. The story is predictable and the humor can be broad, but the film's innocence makes those flaws easier to overlook. Beethoven doesn't offer anything especially sophisticated, but it remains the kind of harmless, nostalgic comedy that is easy to revisit.

I think it achieved exactly what was intended. Family fun with some silly characters, great dogs and a nefarious bad guy. Total nostalgia.
