Where to Watch Batman: Knightfall - Part 1: Knightfall
- Happy to see DC finally adapt the Knightfall saga, and seeing our boy Tim Drake in his classic 90's debut costume is a treat. He's not Dick-Tim, he's not Jason-Tim. He's finally, after all these years, just TIM. Surprised Anson Mount voices Bruce/Batman. He does alright. There's been worse. The adaptation is mostly true to my memory except for the climactic scene where Bane breaks the Bat. I don't want to spoil exactly how but it differs from the original in a way that disappointed me so I can't give it a higher rating.
- Batman: Knightfall Part 1. I read the original comic way back when, so I’m not going to dwell too much on storyline changes or how faithful the adaptation is. I simply don’t remember enough of it. But the animation? Holy crap. The attention to detail is incredible. The shadows are not just there to make everything look darker. They work across the characters’ bodies and faces, and you can actually see Batman being burned down to the bone. By the middle of the movie, he looks exhausted. Then weaker. Then slower. Then he starts getting beaten up by criminals who normally would barely slow him down. And that is where this movie really works. Yes, Batman may jump from enemy to enemy a little too quickly, but watching him slowly collapse physically and mentally is fantastic. It genuinely feels like watching a comic book come alive on screen. And of course, this is Bane’s story. First he breaks Batman mentally. Then spiritually. Then comes the GRAND FINALE. He breaks the man like a wooden toothpick. We all knew it was coming, but that actual fight scene still delivers. This movie was somebody’s pride. You can see it in every frame. Thanks for reading.
- the extra half star is solely for how well they treated my sweet boy tim in the adaptation. i’ve never been a massive fan of kelley jones’ costume designs, though i think his propensity for designing atmospheric compositions has undeniable aura. i don’t think his designs translate well to animation, but the story is so entertainingly adapted that i kind of didn’t care for how unflattering the images could be at times. the last act of the film genuinely felt like a horror movie in certain moments, and despite knowing the knightfall story so well i still felt tangible fear for my bat family. i’m excited to see how they adapt the rest of the narrative and i wish the next two entries came sooner.
- One and a half stars because Vaas is king and Azrael mentioned, but otherwise I didn't realise it was possible to make batman this gay. Zero love went into the scooby-doo animation too, watch Akira or something bruv. If you really are a fan, stop giving your attention to low-effort content and force these thieves to make something good instead. Also graphic violence doesn't = 'muh good film muh epic batman!!!'
- Everything hit: the storytelling, animation, pacing, fight scenes, and even the way Part 1 leaves you hanging. I genuinely cannot wait for Part 2. What really got me, though, was how human Batman feels in this. Obviously, we know Batman is eventually going to find a way to come out on top. He’s Batman. But I don’t think I’ve ever seen him portrayed as this physically and mentally exhausted, where you can actually feel that he’s being pushed to his absolute limit. And Bane is PERFECT for that. Bane has always been one of my favourite Batman villains because he’s so much more than the muscle-head people sometimes reduce him to. He’s incredibly intelligent, calculated, patient, and physically capable of actually matching Batman. We’ve seen glimpses of that side of him before, especially in The Dark Knight Rises, but this takes it to another level. Then there’s Azrael, who adds another level of brutality to the whole thing. I never really got into the comics, so I went into this not knowing much about him or exactly where he fits into the story. That actually made him even more interesting because the entire time I was thinking, what exactly is this guy about to bring to this situation? And he seems ridiculously OP. Without spoiling anything, if this guy actually learns to fully control what he can do, he’s going to be insane. There were moments where I was genuinely thinking Batman might not even be able to handle this dude at full potential. That uncertainty makes the story even better. You've got Bane systematically pushing Batman to his breaking point while this other potentially terrifying force is developing alongside everything. For once, Batman doesn't feel invincible. He feels like a man who simply refuses to stop. 10/10. Amazing. Part 2 cannot come soon enough!
Hands down the best animated Batman project I’ve ever seen.
