It’s a slow burn psychological mindfuck that gets weirder and more disturbing the deeper you go. Beautiful, terrifying, and completely unafraid to leave you unsettled. That bear scene alone lives rent free in my head. One of the best sci-fi horrors of the decade.

If you get it, it's profound. If you dont, it's a mediocre sci fi thriller.

A great movie that has hidden depths that won't be easily understandable at first blush. Because of this, it's not a movie that will be liked by everyone. If you're the movie watcher who likes to sink their teeth into a piece of media and likes to understand the deep metaphorical meaning behind things you may have missed while watching the movie for the first time, you'll find a rewarding story about topics like dealing with trauma and how relationships can evolve. If you're not that type of person who wants to do the work to understand a movie, and like your message to be more neatly presented to you, then you'll find this movie to be, on the surface, a slight letdown.

Mind blowing. Would definitely recommend giving a watch.
  • Cosmic body horror that doesn't overstay its welcome
  • Bad adaptation of a book
  • ## Synopsis After her husband mysteriously reappears affected by what looks like radiation poisoning after being missing for a year, a biologist signs up for a mission to help her understand what happened to him. ## Review This is a cosmic horror, that is light on horror and heavy on mysterious thrills. There are for sure some well crafted and scary initially, they either last too long or you get too much time to see what is happening to worry about it. This story is interesting and ends with a great mystery. But the middle section becomes confusing and requires you to really pay attention. The conversation about refraction and genes makes you need to focus to understand what is going on. Which isn't a bad thing for someone like me that truly enjoys movies, but for someone who is half interested, means that will mess something. I think the team does a great job. I didn't realize that Tessa Thompson and Benedict Wong, both from the MCU in my mind, are in this. Tessa's performance was so good next to Natalie Portman. The two of them are able to talk at such a high level and yet never miss the emotional beats speaks to how well the writers worked together with the team. ## [My Rating] I really like Alex Garland's work. [[Ex Machina]] is one of my favorite movies, partially because of the [[Star Wars Episode VII - The Force Awakens]] cast being in there. Then we have this with Natalie Portman who is one of my favorite actresses and I know I'm in for a good movie. He writes so well for the story and I just think this movie is underrated for movie sake. The horror is a little light for what I remembered, but it is a great thriller. Good writing + good acting from most of the team + really nice CGI makes for a good movie. This is an 8. ## [Parental Rating] There are sex scenes, well the same one multiple times, plus some violence. Some gnarly animals that are just creepy to look at and full of blood. The bear alone will push my mom to a no and my dad will not like the language. Rejected by both.

I watched Garland's DEVS before watching Annihilation, and didn't realise this till the end of the film. So lo and behold my surprise when the ending and the haunting soundtrack feel very... familiar... - AH. The film does quite a fantastic job at presenting an existing concept (strange thing from outer space lands on Earth, how many times have we seen that before?) in a unique way, where the focus is not on the military gung-ho and more on a scientific expedition fuelled by curiosity. The concepts presented align to what you'd expect from Garland - complex, intellectual prompts that reuqire you to think more than gape at the cool visual effects. And it does it very well. Sure, there are some frightening scenes and a bit of combat, but the core is about identity and existence as a whole - which is spectacular. Performances are great all around, and it makes for a movie you're going to want to watch again - and see if you change your hypothesis on the ending this time around.

One of my all time favourite cosmic horror films. Beautiful story, creepy and foreboding. Incredable visual imagery, and the cast and acting are quite strong. It has it's own flaws, but it gives me the perfect amount of cosmic dread you expect in this genre.

Some stretches felt slow, but I thought it was well done overall. I have no clue about the books, so I came in blind. That said, enjoyable story, very well shot, and convincing performances.

Not bad but fails to capture the pure horror of the books. And suffers from the usual "experts acting stupid in dangerous situations". Having the shimmer visible was dumb. And the oppressive and disorienting nature of the environment, which was what made the book so good, was completely missing.

The most valuable films are those that stir emotions and do not leave the viewer indifferent. This is certainly the case with this film. Although classified as science fiction, it is more of a mystery film, closer to the realm of the mystical. One might find many illogicalities and technical flaws here, but this is not a science film; it is not a scientific essay, and dwelling on such matters leads one astray.
