As A24's first theatrical release, A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III is certainly an unusual way to introduce a studio's identity. Roman Coppola throws Charles into a strange mixture of reality and even outright absurdity as he struggles to deal with the end of his relationship. The problem is that I could never quite tell where one stopped and another began. Some sequences clearly feel like Charles retreating into his imagination while others seem grounded in reality, but the film rarely gives enough indication of where the boundaries actually are. Charlie Sheen brings an interesting layer to the role by playing a character whose lifestyle and public image so closely resemble his own, and there's something almost self-aware about his willingness to let the film play with that parallel. Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman bring some welcome personality whenever the film threatens to become too self-indulgent. There is an appealing visual imagination here, and Coppola deserves credit for making a film that looks and feels unlike most romantic comedies. Unfortunately, the style often seems more interested in showing off than giving the story a clear direction. The result is a film that feels like it has plenty to say about heartbreak and escapism without ever settling on a way to say it effectively. I did enjoy the unusual curtain call at the end, with the cast gathering on the beach to bow and introduce themselves before the credits. It felt playful in a way that matched the film's deliberately artificial world, but that same theatricality ultimately highlights how often the film's style gets in the way of its substance. Despite some amusing moments and Charlie Sheen's charisma, I found A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III too unfocused to make the trip inside worthwhile.
